Painting The Nightstands

The first thing I do with any piece I paint is prep. I clean it really well and if it is a lighter color I use a blocking primer. For this piece I mixed a custom color using 1 part Lucky Lavender and 1/4 part Mason Dixon Gray. You can see in the picture the difference, the custom mix is more of a dusty lavender. I use a mixing cup that comes with a lid so I can use it again later.

I also make sure I remove all of the hardware and hinges from the pieces I am using, unlesssss I plan on painting over them. This piece has a very unique hinge setup. I didn’t really want the hinges to stand out too much from the piece anyways so I did a light dry brush of the paint on top of the hinges. When you are painting hardware or hinges you need to make sure you dry brush it, make sure you don’t glop it on otherwise you will have peeling and chipping.

After I painted the entire piece I let it dry and put one more coat of paint. I let the piece dry entirely as well as the hinges.

Painting The Top In Metallics

I used the brand new Moonshine Metallic line by Dixie Belle to paint the top of this piece. I like to put a base coat of one of their paints prior to working with the actual metallics. For this piece I did only one base coat of Manatee Gray.

Once the Manatee Gray is completely dried I applied my MoonShine Metallic in Silver Bullet.

Adding Stencils To The Nightstand Makeover

For this makeover I used the stick & style stencil by redesign with prima. I am awful at stenciling so these have been a life saver. Not only are they easy to use, they are reusable, and they come with 15 yards.

You will peel the stencil from the roll and because it has an adhesive back you will be able to stick it to your piece. I then trimmed down the stencil to fit it correctly to where I wanted the stencil.

Once I have placed the stencil where I want it, I took my brush and dabbed the decor wax directly on top. You can then carefully pull the stencil away immediately after you apply the wax. The stencil can be placed in the next spot, just replace it and gently push down the stencil and repeat the process.

The decor wax is oil based, it will take about 24 hours to fully dry and cure. At that point it will be permanent. You do not need to seal over it but if you choose to, make sure it is fully dry.

Updating Your Hardware and Hinges

I used the decor wax to help update the hinges and the cute little knob. After I was done stenciling, I put the knob back onto the the door. I took my stenciling brush and did a light dry brush over the hinges. I then took steel wool to distress them a bit. Once the knob was put back on I used the brush to brush the decor wax onto it. Look at the HUGE difference!

Adding A Decor Transfer To Complete The Nightstand Makeover

Decor transfers are a great way to add character to your furniture. They are super easy to use and you can use them in full sheets or cut them to fit. You can even just cut bits and pieces off for your furniture. The transfer I used is the Rose & Rogue.

The first step to this process is to measure and trim. I trimmed the transfer to fit the inset of the door. Make sure you measure twice and only cut once. While you are doing this, do not remove the white backing sheet. This will prevent the transfers adhesive back from being exposed and stick where you don’t want it.

After you have measured and are confident in where you want your transfer. You will peel off the back of the transfer and smooth it down with your hand. The transfers come with a burnishing stick. In this case I used the NEW transfer tool by redesign with prima.

I used the transfer tool to “burnish” the transfer down. This is how you are able to release the transfer from the adhesive film. Go slowly with this, if you happen to pull up the transfer and it is not releasing properly set the transfer and plastic film back down and continue to burnish that area until it releases. After you have pulled off the film, you can lightly burnish the transfer again with your finger or a soft rag. The reason burnishing is so important is because when you seal the transfer if your sealer gets underneath an area that has not been burnished properly it will cause peeling or your transfer to pull up.

Adding Some Grunge And Dirt!

I wanted to add a little more dimension to the edges of this piece. For that I used the Clear Best Dang Wax and put it on the edges of the door inset. I let it sit for a minute or two to tack up. I then took a dry paint brush dipped it in the dirt and then tapped it onto the wax. After that I brushed it away with the brush. I then sealed the transfer and the dirt with the Easy Peasy Spray Wax.
