What Is A Bonding Primer?
So WHAT IS a bonding primer? and why? Back in the day we used to just paint things and hope they stayed. Kind of. now a bonding primer is specifically formulated to adhere and bond paint to non porous surfaces. That way you don’t have chipping and peeling. Dixie Belle created a product called Slick Stick which is a bonding primer specifically formulated to work with their paint line! I have painting sooooo many things that were not real wood thanks to Slick Stick. Look at the post I created below, I painted a Hollywoood Regency dresser with plastic drawer fronts!
Let’s Get Started!
Okay so the first step to this process is to have a good high quality paintbrush. If you have brush marks on your primer layers, you may not get a smooth finish with your paint. It is just best to use a good quality brush for every step. I used one of my favorite brushes by Dixie Belle the Oval Small. Do you see how shiny and how non porous that shelf is?
You will want two coats of the slick stick. make sure your piece is nice and cleaned and dry! The first coat will look a little streaky, don’t worry it will look more even with the second coat. Let the first coat dry 2-3 hours before you do the second coat.
See how much more even and less streaky the second coat is?
Once you have let your Slick Stick dry overnight, you are ready for paint and prettiness. i painted this bookcase in Dixie Belle’s The Gulf. Isn’t this color so beautiful? I used my NEW mini angled brush and man am I in LOVEEEE!!
Just remember even though you used a bonding primer and Dixie Belle doesn’t require a top coat, using one will just add to your protection. Let’s be honest Dixie Belle’s Gator Hide has a smooth buttery finish that I prefer anyways!! Double protection and a beautiful finish. SOLD!
Because this was my estheticians bookcase we needed it to be fancy. I put Modge Podge on the back of the bookcase, sprinkled silver glitter then let it dry. I then brush sealed it with gator hide. Boom!! (I will get better pictures once we get it in her office).
