Honesty About Mistakes
I am going to be totally honest with you about this piece. I painted it and hated it, I mean I spent days on a blog/video and couldn’t stand it. As a result, I re-painted it and did something totally different. I think it was for the better because this came out wayyyyy better than my first disaster! Okay so anyways we never learn if we don’t make mistakes right? So here we are.
Artistic Painting Studio
I am super excited to introduce you to one of the coolest products ever!! Jennifer Ferguson is the owner of Artistic Painting Studio. Jennifer holds classes and workshops, she also sells some of the coolest art mediums and supplies ever. If you like texture and layering, she is your girl. Did I mention she creates some of the most unique textured finishes?
Naturally I had to reach out and ask if I could use one of her rollers!! Game CHANGER!! I love texture, but texture with patterns, get out of here!!
I highly recommend you check out what she has to offer!!! HERE
Choosing A Base Coat
Okay so I didn’t choose my base coat or main color, my son did. He is three, he chose Barn Red and I must say it was a GREAT choice!! This color is bright but has a depth and dimension to it that scream to my BOHO love of color.
Sea Spray and paint is what I used to create my texture medium. I mixed three colors colonel mustard, pure ocean, and limeade with a small amount of holy guacamole to darken it a little. I then mixed all three in separate cups to a brownie like batter consistency. You will want to almost “paint spread” the texture along your surface. Do NOT put too much, maybe a few centimeters otherwise if it is too thick it will crack.
Once I had my texture medium on the drawers, I rolled it. I used my decor roller in Bohemian Rhapsody by Artistic Painting Studio. You can rewash and reuse these over and over! I started from one side of the drawer and rolled to the end.
Finishing The Texture And Letting It Dry
This is what your piece should look like after rolling it. For the legs and other spaces I just used a stippling motion to add the texture medium.
One More Layer Of Paint
Once you have allowed the texture medium to dry, it is time for one more coat of barn red. As a result you will get peek-a-boo color popping through after the next step. Do not stress about getting full coverage with this layer, cover as much as you can but if it doesn’t fully cover because of the texture just leave it, it is not a big deal.
Exposed The Layers Of Color
Once you have put your layer of paint over the texture and allowed it to dry, its time to distress. Now I used my Surf Prep sander with a fine sanding pad. You could use a sanding block if you prefer. I like the surf prep because it can be gentle for things like this or strong for stripping surfaces. You could “try” to use your own sander just use a softt hand and high grit to make sure you don’t actually sand the finish off otherwise just hand sand.
To seal the final product, I used the Easy Peasy Spray Wax. It is easy to use and gives me the matte finish I like for BOHO pieces.
I also put together a You Tube video for you that you can check out below 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
