In the past year or so resin pour artwork has become pretty big. I gotta admit I could watch people create this magic ALL. DAY. LONG! Also I want to admit that I am also a woodworking furniture builder on top of being a furniture artist and I HATE working with resin. After thinking to myself HOW can I do this, but you know without the mess and stickiness of resin.

Resin pour is also kind of a permanent thing once you do it and it dries. Alas I figured out how to do this with my favorite chalk mineral paint. You cam always paint over this if you don’t like it or you can change the colors.

What Will You Need?

  1. Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in Bunker Hill Blue

  2. Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in Sand Bar

  3. Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in Yankee Blue

  4. Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in Midnight Sky

  5. Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in Manatee Gray

  6. Dixie Belle Gator Hide

  7. Dixie Belle Blue Sponge

  8. Misting Spray Bottle

  9. Your choice of paintbrush- one for each color- I usually use cheapo-chip brushes or cheap sponge brushes for this

  10. Dixie Belle’s White Lightning Cleaner

  11. Drop Cloth

So let’s get started! The first thing I did was clean this piece really well with Dixie Belle’s White Lightning Cleaner. Make sure you are rinsing your piece with water after you use the cleaner. After I cleaned the piece I actually painted right over the existing paint with the Bunker Hill Blue paint. I allowed the base coat to dry, but I felt like it needed another coat so two coats it is!

Okay now after the base coat was dry I took my gator hide and went over the drawer front with the gator hide using my blue sponge. I do this so that the surface is a little more slick so I can get the perfect resin pour finish look. Also when I want to move the paint around and manipulate the finish I can. So after the gator hide is nice and dry, I start the really fun part!

Getting The Look!

At this point you will need a separate brush for each color. For this particular piece I used cheap foam brushes (to be totally honest I ran out of chip brushes and I didn’t want to clean my better brushes. You don’t need good brushes for this part anyways. You are going to want to put a drop cloth down for this faux resin pour look. Things ARE gonna get a little messy.

You will want to take your mister bottle and mist the area to get it wet before you start dabbing the paint. Once you have misted it NOT SOAKED it, you will start dabbing each color paint in different areas.

Once you are happy with how many spots you have painted and you think you are done, you are going to want to spray the entire drawer front down. I will look something like this VVVV DOWN, those are down arrows lol.

After you have put enough water on the piece, you will move the drawer around to manipulate the water and paint. This will be the best way to get the faux resin pour look. So here I tipped the drawer a few different ways once I was happy with the way it looked I made sure the drawers were on a totally flat surface to sit and dry. (you can always add more water or dab paint on the piece to add colors as well).

After the drawers were dry enough (but not totally dry) I put them back in the dresser just so I could make sure I liked the way they looked. Thennnnn once they totally dried I used my blue sponge and gator hide to seal them!
