The Best Way To Create Boho Painted Furniture

Colorful and boho painted furniture is my all time favorite style. I realize not everyone loves it but I can’t love it enough, if I could do my entire house boho I would. This is NOT a joke!! Color, shapes, texture, all those things make me super happy. This piece I created makes me super happy and I am going to show you how I did it!!

Before…..

This piece is in good shape. It needed a good cleaning and if I am being honest that hardware as cute as it is, is NOT BOHO. This is very common hardware on the piece I find in Belgium. I will save them for later. The first step was to clean really well and then remove the hardware. This hardware does NOT have screws so I had to get my handy dandy flat head screwdriver.

Prepping For Different Hardware

Every once in a while the universe is nice to us and as a result we don’t have to patch up holes for new hardware. This however was NOT one of those times. I made sure after I took the hardware off, I cleaned the piece, look how dirty it was under those handles! My favorite wood filler is Dixie Mud! It is durable but sands easily, you can actually even use a damp rag to wipe away excess once it has dried. It’s pretty amazing. I use a plastic putty spatula to apply my mud, it helps me get in the holes and level it off nicely. Once dried I sand away the excess.

Painting Your Base Coat

Before I add the texture I put a base coat of paint down. For this piece I used Antebellum Blue. I like to have a nice solid base coat down because when the chipping and sanding back happens later it won’t expose as much of the wooden finish below.

 Making Boho Painted Furniture Come Alive

For this part I used the NEW Stick N’ Style Stencils from Redesign With Prima, they are sticky so they are perfect for people like me who are terrible at stenciling. This particular style is called Irregular Triangles. You will unroll it from your stencil roll and place it where you want, these are reusable so you can pull it up and replace it, use it and place it somewhere else and reuse it. I used Art Alchemy metallic acrylic paint for the stencil because I wanted a super bright and shimmer look.

Adding Shimmer

I used strips of cardboard for this, I could have used plastic spatulas but I didn’t want to clean them and I like finding a use for other things. I randomly placed the different color on top of where the stencil was. For the top drawer I did the entire stencil on the drawer front. The other drawers I placed the paint randomly, as a result I got a more “boho” feel.

I didn’t wait for the paint to try to remove the stencil, also it’s important to tell you that I did not wait for the paint to be dried for 24 hours so, a little paint DID pull up from the stencil adhesive. I knew it was going to happen and wanted it to happen. If you want to prevent that get a towel and stick your stencil on there to pull some of the tackiness off first THEN use your stencil, therefore it won’t pull the paint.

Let’s Add Texture!

I added four different colors for texture, Peony, Daisy, Florida Orange and Pure Ocean. I am going to should you how I mixed and applied Pure Ocean. The first step was to put a scoop of the Sea Spray and then I added the paint. I mix it to a brownie/pancake batter like consistency.

Creating Color for Boho Painted Furniture

Once I mixed the sea spray and paint mix, I applied it in random areas across the piece. I did one color at a time until the entire piece was cover in cool boho color!!

Once the paint and texture was completely dried, I paint over all of the texture with Antebellum Blue. Once the paint was dried, I used sand paper (120 grit) to reveal the colors underneath. LOOK HOW COOL!

Finishing Off The Boho Look

Once I was done with everything, I added the Patchwork Transfer. I burnished it one more time with a soft rag and then went over it with fine steel wool to distress it.  Once everything was finished I sealed it with Easy Peasy Spray Wax by Dixie Belle.
