Painting A Base Coat

My plan for this piece was to do a sort of neutral boho look, a mixture and layering of colors and textures. One of the first steps to this piece was to paint the base coat in Spanish Moss. I removed all of the drawers so I could paint the frame as well as the sides. I taped around the side details so I could keep that part natural wood and paint the trim piece in Fluff later.

Adding Layers and Color

I know I said I was adding layers and color, what I meant was neutral colors. Neutral boho is the look I wanted on this piece. Often we think of boho as bright and colorful, as a result we dismiss neutrals as boho. Let me tell you though, boho CAN be neutral. I have had some people tell me this isn’t boho, but what is boho? I say it is a layering and mixing of colors, textures, shapes, raw wood and painted wood. Whatever it is this piece was fun!!

When working with the drawers the first thing I did was paint the center in the color burlap.

Painting The Drawer Trim

Next step was to paint the trim around the drawer edges with fluff.

Blending The Drawers Into Neutral Boho

When your second coat of burlap is still wet you want to add the vintage duck egg around the edges. I have also made a video for this entire process in case you learn better that way. You will add the vintage duck egg and then take a paint brush and go in a circular motion and horizontal sweeping motion to blend. Using these colors added a small pop of color but stayed true to the neutral theme.

Layering With Stencils

After your drawers are completely dried, stenciling will be the next step. I used a wall damask stencil and cut it to fit the drawer insets. Fluff and a stencil brush were used to create this next layer. Painters tape is great for holding stencils in place without pulling off paint. You do not want too much paint on your brush because it will bleed underneath the stencil. Remember you can always add more but taking paint away is much harder. While using a dabbing motion I dabbed the entire drawer front stencil.

stenciling

I do not wait for the paint to dry to remove my stencils. While carefully removing the tape I pulled the stencil away to reveal a super cute layer!

Finishing Up The Buffet

After I stenciled the drawers and painted the body, I distressed the piece slightly. I decided to use the original black hardware and then the piece was done!!
