You Need To Check Out This Affordable DIY Anthropologie Inspired Furniture

I am a huge fan of mud cloth patterns. Having traveled around the world, I try to pull inspiration from that to my art. I am also a HUGE boho fan. Sometimes we say BOHO and people think it means colorful and crazy. To me BOHO is a mix of patterns, textures, colors, and shapes. I created this piece but then my client said it was like it was from his favorite store, Anthropologie. So there it is, an Anthropolgie inspired piece of furniture.I didn’t intend for this to be an inspiration piece until it became one unbeknownst to me at first. Win, win right? So this is easy, and requires few supplies.

Let’s Get Started

Okay so this piece actually breaks apart into two pieces. I also pulled the wine rack out as well so I could paint behind it. Truth be told I was going to paint it until I decided the wood tone really helps add to the character of this piece.

Prepping      

This piece had a little shine to it. As a result I did a scuff sand on the entire piece with my very fine rad pad. Afterwards I cleaned it really well with my white lightening cleaner.

Ready For Paint!

This piece is ready for paint!!! I used Dixie Belle’s Gravel Road all over the entire piece. I painted two coats to be exact. This piece wasn’t really inspired by anything at first, then my client told me it reminded him of his favorite store. So there it goes, Anthropologie inspired furniture!

Adding A Pop Of Fun!

If you have been following me you KNOW I always have to add some kind of color to my pieces. I HAVE to. For this piece I painted the inside of the cabinets with gravel road AND barn red. For the backside of the door I applied a decor transfer called Western Tapestry. It really just creates a nice and fun surprise inside!

Let’s Get Stenciling

I really like using my Dixie Belle French Tip brush for stenciling, it holds the perfect amount of paint but it is soft so when I am stippling it doesn’t become a chore or hurt my wrists. I also like the shape, it allows me to be more precise when I am stenciling. For this I had to cut my stencil up (before you yell at me, yes I paid for the stencil and yes I cut it) I had to, it was the ONLY way I could properly stencil this piece. If you have a piece with a flat front then you won’t need to. Each piece is different. I made sure to tape the stencil in place, one so it would stay put and two, to help with any “overpaint”.

I used the mud cloth stencil for this piece which is very much Anthropologie inspired. Anthropologie is a store that is very eclectic with styles from what seems like all over the world.

Fixing Stencil Paint Bleeds

Sometimes when you are stenciling in odd areas or with thicker stencils, you can have under bleed. Is that even a word? I just made it up, you know where the paint bleeds “under” the stencil? I used an artist brush and just spot fix the areas. Easy peasy. Professional results.

Distressing and Wax

I am in love with my Surf Prep sander. Truthfully it is worth ever penny! I was able to not only lightly distress this piece but I also like to go over my paint finish one time over with a very high grit to get a super smooth and professional finish. I cannot even tell you have easy it is now. Anyways I digress, I distressing this piece ever so slightly, then I waxed.

Before I use colored wax I always lay down a clear wax, for me easy peasy spray wax is the easiest and least time consuming. I sprayed the entire piece down with the spray wax then allowed it to dry. If I am going to do an Anthropologie inspired piece I am going to go hard! I decided the white washed look with wax would be perfect. As you can see I applied the wax and wiped away with a paper towel, however I left thicker wax areas in the recessed areas. The deeper wood grain on this piece also was PERFECT!! You see how that wax just goes right in there?!?!?! I went back and buffed my wax about 20 minutes after application with a soft rag, and VOILA!!
